The sub sandwich, commonly known as a hoagie, has its origins in Philadelphia, where it emerged from the city’s vibrant Italian community. Various tales about its origin point to the shipyards in the Hog Island area of Philadelphia. In 1992, the hoagie was officially designated as the city’s sandwich, cementing its place in culinary history. Staci Hoard’s deluxe sub pays homage to this beloved creation while adding her own twist with the inclusion of tasty ingredients.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 loaf (1 pound) French bread
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ pound thinly sliced deli smoked turkey
  • ½ pound thinly sliced deli ham
  • 6 slices hard salami
  • 1 medium sweet yellow pepper, julienned
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ pound sliced provolone cheese
  • 1½ cups guacamole

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Cut the French bread loaf in half lengthwise and place the cut side up on a baking sheet. Bake for 4-5 minutes or until the bread is toasted.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and minced garlic. Spread this mixture over the bottom half of the toasted bread.
  3. Layer the sliced smoked turkey, ham, salami, julienned yellow pepper, sliced red onion, and provolone cheese on top of the bread.
  4. Place the loaded bread in the oven and bake for 7-8 minutes, or until the meat is heated through.
  5. Preheat your broiler. Move the baking sheet with the sandwich about 3-4 inches away from the heat source and broil for 3 minutes or until the cheese is lightly browned.
  6. Remove the sandwich from the oven. Spread the guacamole generously on the top half of the bread.
  7. Carefully place the top half of the bread over the cheese layer. Cut the sandwich into six equal slices.
