Super Banana Splits are a delightful and indulgent dessert that takes the classic banana split to a whole new level of deliciousness. The classic banana split is believed to have been invented in the early 20th century in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. According to legend, a young pharmacist named David Evans Strickler created the banana split as a new sundae for his pharmacy’s soda fountain. He sliced a banana in half lengthwise, placed it in a long dish, and added three scoops of ice cream – chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry – in between the banana halves. He then topped each scoop with a different flavored syrup and garnished the whole creation with whipped cream, chopped nuts, and a maraschino cherry.

The banana split quickly gained popularity and became a favorite treat among customers, spreading to other soda fountains and ice cream parlors across the country. Over time, variations of the classic banana split were created, incorporating different ice cream flavors and toppings to suit individual preferences.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
  • ⅔ cup heavy whipping cream
  • ¾ teaspoon cherry extract
  • 6 medium firm bananas, cut in half lengthwise
  • 6 scoops each strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream
  • Whipped topping, chopped nuts, and maraschino cherries with stems

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small heavy saucepan, cook and stir the semisweet chocolate chips and heavy whipping cream over low heat until the mixture becomes smooth and blended. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the cherry extract. Keep the chocolate sauce warm.
  2. Place two pieces of banana in each of six shallow serving dishes. Top each serving with a scoop of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream, creating layers of ice cream between the banana halves.
  3. Drizzle the warm chocolate sauce generously over the ice cream and bananas, ensuring all the flavors are covered in this delectable sauce.
  4. Garnish each Super Banana Split with a dollop of whipped topping, a sprinkle of chopped nuts for added crunch, and a maraschino cherry with a stem for a vibrant touch.
