South Carolina Cobbler

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

South Carolina Cobbler is a beloved dessert that embodies the warmth and hospitality of Southern cuisine. This delightful dish showcases a sweet and juicy fruit filling, typically made with peaches, berries, or a combination of both, topped with a buttery biscuit-like crust. South Carolina Cobbler is a comforting and satisfying treat that brings together the flavors of ripe fruits and a delicate, golden crust. With its rustic charm and comforting flavors, this dessert has become a timeless favorite in the heart of the South.

South Carolina Cobbler has deep roots in the culinary traditions of the American South. The region’s fertile soil and bountiful harvests of fruits, especially peaches, have made cobbler a popular dessert for generations.

Cobblers, which are believed to have originated in the British American colonies, were initially made with a simple biscuit dough dropped on top of a fruit filling. This rustic and economical approach allowed for variations based on the available fruits and the creativity of the cook.

Over time, South Carolina Cobbler developed its unique characteristics, reflecting the flavors and influences of the region. The combination of juicy peaches, sweet berries, or a mix of seasonal fruits creates a luscious filling that is enhanced by the crisp and golden crust.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE FRUIT FILLING:

  • 6 cups fresh or frozen fruits (such as peaches, blackberries, or a combination)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

FOR THE CRUST:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

FOR THE FRUIT FILLING:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the fruits, granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Gently toss the ingredients until the fruits are evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the fruit mixture to a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

FOR THE CRUST:

  1. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the milk and vanilla extract together.
  4. Gradually pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, stirring with a fork until the dough comes together.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the fruit filling, covering the surface as evenly as possible.
  6. Bake the cobbler in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly.
  7. Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
