I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Mexican chocolate is a type of chocolate that is flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, and sometimes other spices like ancho chili powder. This chocolate has a unique and complex flavor profile that sets it apart from other types of chocolate, and it is often used in Mexican desserts and other sweet treats.
Here’s a recipe to make it at home:

Serving size and preparation time:

This Mexican chocolate pie recipe serves 8 people and takes about 45 minutes of preparation time, plus an additional 2 hours or more of chilling time in the refrigerator.

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

For the filling:

  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs

For the topping:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C).
  2. To make the crust, mix the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar in a bowl until well combined. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish. Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then remove it from the oven and let it cool.
  3. To make the filling, combine the sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, and milk in a saucepan. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it starts to simmer.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the chopped chocolate, ground cinnamon, and salt. Stir the mixture until the chocolate is completely melted and the ingredients are well combined.
  5. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl, then gradually stir in the chocolate mixture until the eggs are fully incorporated.
  6. Pour the filling into the prepared crust and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the filling is set and the edges are slightly puffed.
  7. Let the pie cool to room temperature before refrigerating for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  8. To make the topping, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the pie and garnish with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder.

This recipe is a delicious way to enjoy the flavors of Mexican chocolate in a classic dessert. Serve it for a special occasion or as a sweet treat to enjoy any time.

Garnishing suggestions:

Here are some garnishing suggestions for your Mexican chocolate pie:
Chocolate shavings: Use a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife to create thin chocolate shavings from a bar of dark chocolate. Sprinkle them over the top of the whipped cream for a beautiful and decadent touch.
Cinnamon stick: Add a whole cinnamon stick to the top of the pie for a rustic and festive look.
Fresh berries: Serve the pie with a side of fresh raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries for a pop of color and a sweet contrast to the rich chocolate flavor.
Dust with cocoa powder: Sift a light dusting of cocoa powder over the whipped cream for a subtle and elegant garnish.
Crushed nuts: Top the pie with a sprinkle of crushed nuts, such as almonds or hazelnuts, for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
The pie is typically topped with whipped cream, which can be flavored with a touch of cinnamon or vanilla to complement the chocolate and spice flavors of the filling. Some people also like to sprinkle additional spices or chocolate shavings on top for a beautiful and festive presentation. Mexican chocolate pie is a delicious and indulgent dessert that is perfect for any special occasion or holiday celebration.
