Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Slowly whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream until the mixture is smooth. Cook over medium heat until the sauce has thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and well combined.
  7. Add the cooked green beans to the skillet and stir to coat with the sauce.
  8. Transfer the green bean mixture to a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  9. In a small bowl, mix together the panko breadcrumbs and chopped parsley. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the green bean casserole.
  10. Bake the casserole for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  11. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
