About

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Maple Candy is a confection that captures the essence of nature’s sweetness, celebrating the richness of maple sugar and the comforting flavors of brown sugar. This candy is a testament to the art of crafting simple yet indulgent treats that evoke both nostalgia and delight. Maple Candy invites individuals to experience the magic of transforming pure ingredients into a confection that pays homage to the beauty of maple trees and the sweetness they provide.

Maple sugar has a long history as a cherished natural sweetener, used by Indigenous communities for generations before European settlers arrived. The process of tapping maple trees and boiling down the sap to create maple syrup and sugar has been a tradition passed down through centuries. The production of maple sugar is often associated with rural communities and the arrival of spring, making it a treasured seasonal treat.

The art of candy-making has evolved over time, with different regions and cultures adapting their own techniques to create unique confections. Maple Candy marries the heritage of maple sugar with the craft of candy-making, creating a confection that is both familiar and extraordinary.

In communities where maple trees are abundant, the process of collecting sap and producing maple syrup and sugar is a cultural tradition that brings people together. The joy of harvesting and creating something as pure and delicious as maple sugar candy is a testament to the connection between humans, nature, and tradition.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cupful maple sugar
  • 1/2 cupful brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoonful Crisco (or any vegetable shortening)
  • 1/4 teaspoonful salt
  • 1 teaspoonful vanilla extract
  • 1 cupful water

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a saucepan, dissolve the maple sugar and brown sugar in water over medium heat. Stir to ensure that the sugars are fully dissolved.
  2. Once the mixture comes to a boil, add the Crisco and salt. Continue to boil the mixture.
  3. Test the candy by dropping a small amount into cold water. It should harden and form a solid shape. Alternatively, the mixture should reach a temperature of 258°F (126.7°C) on a candy thermometer.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. This will enhance the flavor of the candy.
  5. Grease tins or pans with Crisco to prevent sticking.
  6. Pour the candy mixture into the Criscoed tins.
  7. While the candy is still partially cooled, use a knife to mark it into squares or pieces.
  8. Allow the candy to cool completely and set.
  9. Once the candy is completely cooled, break it into individual squares along the marked lines.

CONCLUSION:

  • Maple Candy is a tribute to the natural sweetness of maple sugar and the tradition of crafting confections that honor the connection between nature and culture. The history of maple sugar production and the evolution of candy-making techniques are woven into this confection, creating a treat that celebrates both heritage and creativity. Crafting Maple Candy is an invitation to experience the joy of creating something pure and delightful, embodying the essence of springtime and the pleasures of homemade sweets. Sharing Maple Candy is sharing a piece of nature’s sweetness and the warmth of tradition, evoking memories of simpler times and the joys of savoring a timeless treat.
