INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cupfuls brown sugar
  • 1/4 cupful molasses
  • 5 tablespoonfuls Crisco (or any vegetable shortening)
  • 1/4 teaspoonful salt
  • 1 gill water (approximately 1/2 cup)
  • 1 teaspoonful vanilla extract

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a saucepan, dissolve the brown sugar in the gill of water over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  2. Add the Crisco, molasses, and salt to the sugar and water mixture.
  3. Continue to cook the mixture, stirring continuously, until it reaches the hard ball stage. Test the candy by dropping a small amount into cold water. It should form a hard ball or reach a temperature of 254°F (123°C) on a candy thermometer.
  4. Once the candy has reached the desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of the candy.
  6. Grease a tin or pan with Crisco to prevent sticking.
  7. Pour the candy mixture into the Criscoed tin.
  8. Allow the candy to cool completely and set.
  9. Once the candy is completely cooled, break it into rough pieces.
