I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Fried Onion Rings are a beloved appetizer or side dish that offers a crispy exterior, a tender and flavorful onion center, and a delightful crunch with every bite. These iconic rings have become a staple in American cuisine, gracing menus in diners, burger joints, and restaurants across the country. With their simple yet satisfying combination of onions and a crispy coating, Fried Onion Rings are a crowd-pleasing favorite that brings joy to any meal.

The history of Fried Onion Rings is not well-documented, but they are believed to have originated in the United States in the early 20th century. They gained popularity during the rise of fast-food chains and diners, becoming a classic side dish alongside burgers and sandwiches.

The exact origin story of Fried Onion Rings remains unclear, but it is speculated that they were a variation of a traditional European dish called “Fried Onion Flowers.” This dish involved battering and frying whole onions, resulting in a similar concept to today’s Fried Onion Rings.

Over time, the recipe evolved, and the focus shifted from whole onions to sliced rings. This adaptation allowed for better portion control and a more uniform frying process. Today, Fried Onion Rings are synonymous with American comfort food, enjoyed by people of all ages.

COOK: 15 MIN.

MAKES: 4-6 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 large onions, cut into 1/2-inch thick slices and separated into rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a shallow bowl or dish, combine the all-purpose flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir the dry ingredients until well mixed.
  2. Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl or dish.
  3. Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk, ensuring it is fully coated.
  4. Transfer the buttermilk-coated onion ring to the flour mixture and coat it thoroughly, pressing gently to adhere the flour mixture to the onion ring. Shake off any excess flour.
  5. Place the coated onion ring on a baking sheet or wire rack. Repeat the process with the remaining onion rings.
  6. Fill a deep skillet or Dutch oven with enough vegetable oil to submerge the onion rings. Heat the oil to a temperature of 375°F (190°C).
  7. Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the skillet. Fry the onion rings for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Use a slotted spoon or a spider strainer to remove the fried onion rings from the oil, allowing any excess oil to drain.
  9. Transfer the fried onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate to remove any additional oil. Repeat the frying process with the remaining onion rings.
  10. Serve the Fried Onion Rings immediately while they are still hot and crispy. They can be enjoyed on their own or served with your favorite dipping sauces, such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, or aioli.

NOTES:

  • For added flavor, you can incorporate different spices or seasonings into the flour mixture, such as cayenne pepper, dried herbs, or grated Parmesan cheese. Feel free to experiment and customize the coating to suit your taste preferences.
