Cinnamon Blueberry Jam

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Embark on a journey of delightful flavors with Cinnamon Blueberry Jam. This homemade jam combines the natural sweetness of juicy blueberries with a warm hint of cinnamon, creating a perfect balance of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds. Whether spread on toast, paired with cheese, or used as a filling for pastries, this jam is a versatile and delicious addition to any pantry.

The art of making fruit preserves, including jams, dates back centuries as a way to preserve the seasonal abundance of fruits. Blueberries, with their vibrant color and juicy flesh, have long been a favorite fruit for making jams and jellies. The addition of cinnamon to blueberry jam brings a delightful warmth and complexity to the flavor profile.

Cinnamon itself has a rich history, with its origins in ancient Egypt. It was highly valued and used as a spice, perfume, and even as a form of currency. Its aromatic and slightly sweet taste made it a prized ingredient in various culinary creations.

Combining the beloved blueberry with the comforting warmth of cinnamon results in a jam that captures the essence of homemade goodness. The recipe has been passed down through generations, with each family adding their own personal touch and variations.

PREP: 15 MIN

PROCESS: 10 MIN

MAKES: 4 HALF-PINTS

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups fresh blueberries
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter (to reduce foaming)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the blueberries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg (if using), and butter. The butter helps reduce foaming during the cooking process.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the sugar begins to dissolve and the blueberries release their juices.
  3. Once the mixture comes to a simmer, reduce the heat to low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, for about 30-40 minutes. The jam will gradually thicken and the blueberries will break down, creating a luscious texture.
  4. As the jam cooks, use a wooden spoon or a potato masher to lightly crush the blueberries, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. To test if the jam is ready, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate and let it cool for a few seconds. If the jam holds its shape and has a slightly sticky consistency, it is done. If it’s too runny, continue cooking for a few more minutes and retest.
  6. Once the jam reaches the desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the jam to cool for a few minutes.
  7. Transfer the warm jam into clean, sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue.
  8. Place the lids on the jars and tighten them securely. Allow the jars to cool completely at room temperature.
  9. Once cooled, store the jars of Cinnamon Blueberry Jam in the refrigerator. The jam will continue to thicken as it cools further.
  10. Enjoy your homemade Cinnamon Blueberry Jam on toast, muffins, scones, or any other favorite baked goods. It also makes a delightful addition to cheese platters or as a filling for pastries.

NOTES:

  • For longer storage, you can process the jars in a water bath canner following proper canning procedures. This will allow the jam to be stored at room temperature for an extended period.
  • Indulge in the rich flavors of Cinnamon Blueberry Jam and savor the taste of homemade goodness. With its vibrant blueberry goodness and warm undertones of cinnamon, this jam is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen. Whether shared with loved ones or enjoyed on your own, this delectable jam is a delightful way to celebrate the flavors of the season.
