About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Mint Juleps are synonymous with Southern hospitality and the epitome of refreshing summer cocktails. This iconic drink, made with bourbon, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice, is a beloved symbol of Kentucky and the South. With its cool and minty flavors, Mint Juleps offer a delightful escape from the heat, transporting you to a front porch adorned with rocking chairs and lazy afternoons. Whether enjoyed at the Kentucky Derby or in the comfort of your own home, Mint Juleps are a classic and timeless libation that embodies the spirit of Southern charm.

The history of the Mint Julep can be traced back to the 18th century, where it was believed to have originated in the Southern United States. The exact origins of the drink are debated, with some attributing its creation to early American colonists, while others credit it to African American slaves who infused their own traditions and flavors into Southern cuisine.

Originally, the Mint Julep was a morning beverage that combined water, sugar, and mint, often served as a medicinal tonic. Over time, it evolved into a popular cocktail, especially in the Southern states, where it became synonymous with hospitality and leisure.

The Mint Julep gained particular prominence in Kentucky, where it became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938. The race’s association with the cocktail further solidified its status as a quintessential Southern libation.

  4. Fill the glass or cup with crushed ice, packing it tightly.
  5. Stir the drink using a long-handled spoon, allowing the mint and ice to mix and chill the cocktail.
  6. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint, gently pressing it into the ice to release its fragrance.
  7. Serve the Mint Julep immediately, preferably with a straw, allowing the flavors to meld as you sip through the icy concoction.
