Monster Caramel Apples

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Monster Caramel Apples are delicious treats that combine the sweetness of caramel, the crunch of Oreo cookies, and the tartness of apples. These monstrous treats are perfect for Halloween or any festive occasion. The caramel coating is made from a rich blend of butter, brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and corn syrup, creating a smooth and gooey texture. Topped with white candy coating and sprinkles, these caramel apples are transformed into spooky masterpieces.

The origin of caramel apples can be traced back to the late 19th century. It is believed that a candy maker named William W. Kolb from Newark, New Jersey, was experimenting with leftover caramel from his candy shop. One day, he dipped apples into the caramel mixture and allowed them to cool. The result was a delightful combination of flavors and textures. Kolb then began selling these caramel-coated apples at local fairs and events, and they quickly gained popularity.

Over time, caramel apples became associated with Halloween, as they perfectly captured the spirit of the holiday. The tradition of giving out caramel apples during Halloween spread across the United States, and it has become a beloved treat during the fall season.

As for the “Monster” twist on caramel apples, it adds a fun and spooky element to the traditional treat. By incorporating Oreo cookies, white candy coating, and decorative sprinkles, the caramel apples take on a monstrous appearance, making them a hit among both kids and adults.

PREP: 40 MIN.

COOK: 30 MIN. + COOLING

MAKES: 8-10 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 to 10 medium apples
  • 8 to 10 wooden sticks
  • 32 Oreo cookies, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup butter, cubed
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 squares (1 ounce each) white candy coating, coarsely chopped
  • ½ cup orange and brown sprinkles

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Insert a wooden stick into each apple. Place the apples on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet and chill them in the refrigerator. This step helps the caramel adhere better to the apples.
  2. In a heavy 3-qt. saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and corn syrup. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until the mixture reaches 248°F (firm-ball stage) on a candy thermometer. This usually takes about 30-40 minutes.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Be cautious as the mixture will be extremely hot.
  4. Dip each apple into the hot caramel mixture, ensuring that the apple is completely coated. Allow any excess caramel to drip off. Then, dip the bottom of the caramel-coated apple into the coarsely chopped Oreo cookies, pressing lightly to make them adhere to the caramel. Place the caramel apples back onto the baking sheet to cool.
  5. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white candy coating. Stir until the coating becomes smooth and creamy. Transfer the melted candy coating to a small plastic bag and cut a small hole in one corner of the bag. Drizzle the melted coating over the caramel apples, creating a monster-like appearance.
  6. Decorate the caramel apples with orange and brown sprinkles while the candy coating is still wet. The sprinkles will adhere to the coating and enhance the monster look.
  7. Allow the caramel apples to cool completely and for the candy coating to set before serving.
