Swedish Coffee Bread, or “Kaffebröd” as it’s known in Sweden, is a beloved traditional baked treat that graces tables during coffee breaks, celebrations, and family gatherings. This delectable bread is infused with the enchanting aroma of cardamom, creating a sensory experience that’s both delightful and nostalgic. The history of Swedish Coffee Bread is steeped in Scandinavian culinary traditions, where warmth, togetherness, and cherished recipes are at the heart of every meal.

Swedish Coffee Bread has its origins in the Scandinavian countries, where coffee breaks, or “fika,” are an integral part of daily life. The tradition of gathering for coffee and baked goods reflects the cultural emphasis on hospitality and quality time spent with loved ones. Cardamom, a spice native to India, was introduced to Scandinavia through trade routes, becoming a prized ingredient that’s now synonymous with Swedish baking.

The process of making Swedish Coffee Bread showcases the meticulous care and attention that goes into crafting each roll or loaf. Kneading, rising, and baking transform simple ingredients into a fragrant masterpiece that brings comfort and joy to those who enjoy it.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cupfuls hot milk
  • 3/4 cupful sugar
  • 1/2 cupful Crisco (shortening)
  • 1/2 teaspoonful salt
  • 15 cardamom seeds
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 2 cupfuls flour

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Extracting Cardamom Seeds:
    • Remove the seeds from 15 cardamom pods and grind them finely. The aromatic cardamom seeds are a hallmark of Swedish Coffee Bread’s flavor.
  2. Combining Hot Milk, Sugar, and Shortening:
    • In a bowl, combine 2 cupfuls of hot milk with 3/4 cupful of sugar and 1/2 cupful of Crisco. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the Crisco melts.
  3. Adding Ground Cardamom:
    • Add the ground cardamom seeds to the milk mixture. The cardamom adds a distinct and fragrant flavor to the bread.
  4. Preparing Yeast Mixture:
    • Dissolve 1 yeast cake in a little tepid water and mix with a bit of flour to create a yeast mixture.
  5. Combining Yeast and Flour:
    • When the milk mixture is lukewarm, add the yeast mixture to it. Stir to combine.
  6. Adding Flour and Kneading:
    • Gradually add enough flour to make a stiff dough. Mix until the dough comes together.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  7. First Rising:
    • Place the kneaded dough in a bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise until it doubles in size.
  8. Shaping and Second Rising:
    • Once the dough has risen, shape it into rolls or loaves according to your preference.
    • Place the shaped dough on baking sheets or pans and allow it to rise again until it increases in size.
  9. Baking Process:
    • Preheat your oven to a moderate temperature.
    • Bake the rolls or loaves in the preheated oven until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  10. Finishing Touch:
    • Once baked, the Swedish Coffee Bread should have a golden exterior and a fragrant aroma.
  11. Serving Tradition:
    • In Sweden, Swedish Coffee Bread is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee during “fika” breaks, emphasizing the importance of relaxation and connection.
  12. Yield:
    • The recipe yields approximately eighteen rolls or two small loaves, making it perfect for sharing during coffee gatherings or family occasions.

In conclusion, Swedish Coffee Bread embodies the heart of Scandinavian baking traditions, inviting people to slow down, savor, and share moments of togetherness. This aromatic bread is a symbol of warmth and hospitality, bridging cultures and generations with its enchanting flavor. Whether enjoyed during a coffee break or presented at a festive table, Swedish Coffee Bread brings a taste of tradition and the art of baking to life.
