About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Silver Nut Cake is a delightful creation that brings together the elegance of silver and the richness of nuts in a dessert that is both visually appealing and flavorful. This cake not only tantalizes the taste buds but also carries a story that connects the art of baking with a touch of sophistication. The history of Silver Nut Cake reflects a time when desserts were adorned with the grace and style reminiscent of silverware.

The concept of “silver” in the name of this cake alludes to the preciousness and elegance associated with silver as a valuable metal. While silver is not used as an ingredient, its symbolic significance reflects a culinary tradition that focused on creating sophisticated and visually stunning desserts. Such creations were often reserved for special occasions, where both taste and presentation were of utmost importance.

The practice of using nuts in cakes has been a part of culinary history for centuries. Nuts were cherished for their rich flavor and texture, and they often held symbolic value in various cultures. In the case of Silver Nut Cake, the combination of chopped pecans or English walnut meats adds a delightful crunch and nutty essence to the dessert.

The recipe provided captures the essence of this tradition, showcasing the skill of blending ingredients to create a harmonious cake. The use of Crisco as a shortening harks back to the era when this ingredient was widely employed in baking before butter became more commonly used.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cupful sugar
  • 1/2 cupful Crisco (shortening)
  • 4 whites of eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoonful vanilla extract
  • 2 cupfuls flour
  • 1/2 teaspoonful salt
  • 3 teaspoonfuls baking powder
  • 1 cupful chopped pecans or English walnut meats
  • 1/2 cupful milk

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to a moderate temperature.
  2. Grease and flour a cake tin using Crisco.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the Crisco and sugar together until thoroughly combined.
  4. Add the egg whites and beat until they form a stiff froth.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract, ensuring it’s evenly incorporated.
  6. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, salt, and baking powder together.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the Crisco mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
  8. Fold in the chopped pecans or English walnut meats, distributing them evenly throughout the batter.
  9. Carefully fold in the beaten egg whites, creating a light and airy texture.
  10. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin, spreading it evenly.
  11. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for approximately thirty-five minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  12. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin.

NOTE:

  •  This recipe yields one small Silver Nut Cake. The combination of Crisco, nuts, and the fluffy egg whites results in a cake that is both elegant and delectable. The tradition of using elegant names like “silver” in recipes harks back to an era when desserts were crafted with the intention of delighting both the senses and the spirit of celebration.
