Salmon Croquettes have a rich history, originating from European and American culinary traditions. Croquettes, or “croqueta” in French, refer to small, breaded and fried patties often made with meat, seafood, or vegetables.

In the United States, Salmon Croquettes gained popularity in the early 20th century when canned salmon became widely available. This affordable and convenient ingredient allowed households to create delicious and economical meals. Over time, Salmon Croquettes became a beloved Southern dish, cherished for their simplicity and flavor.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cans (14.75 ounces each) of salmon, drained and flaked
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plus extra for coating)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or your preferred seafood seasoning)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil for frying

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flaked salmon, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, minced garlic, chopped parsley, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. In a separate small bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Add the beaten eggs to the salmon mixture and stir until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. The mixture should hold together when pressed.
  3. Place additional breadcrumbs in a shallow dish or plate. This will be used to coat the salmon croquettes.
  4. Using your hands, shape the salmon mixture into patties, about 3 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. Coat each patty with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere the breadcrumbs to the surface.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. The oil should be approximately 1/4 inch deep.
  6. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the salmon croquettes in the skillet, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Cook the croquettes for approximately 3-4 minutes per side, or until they become golden brown and crispy.
  7. Transfer the cooked salmon croquettes to a plate lined with paper towels to drain off any excess oil.
  8. Serve the Salmon Croquettes hot, allowing their crispy exterior and tender interior to be enjoyed. They can be served as a main course accompanied by a side salad or as a delightful addition to a sandwich or slider.
  9. For added flavor and freshness, garnish the Salmon Croquettes with a squeeze of lemon juice, a dollop of tartar sauce, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs.
