In this detailed guide, we will explore the history and origins of Hurricanes and provide a step-by-step preparation process to help you create this tropical cocktail in your own home.

The Hurricane cocktail traces its roots back to New Orleans, Louisiana, where it was created in the 1940s. The drink was first crafted by Pat O’Brien, a bar owner looking to use up excess rum stock during the World War II era. Rum was plentiful, and the cocktail’s popularity grew among American soldiers stationed in the city.

The name “Hurricane” was inspired by the shape of the glassware used to serve the drink, which resembled hurricane lamp globes. Originally, the cocktail was made with just rum and passion fruit syrup. However, due to a shortage of the syrup, other fruit juices, such as orange and lemon, were substituted. This adaptation led to the creation of the modern-day Passion Fruit Hurricane, featuring a blend of tropical flavors.
