M&M Cookies are a delightful and colorful treat that combines the classic flavors of buttery cookie dough with the irresistible sweetness of M&M candies. These cookies are loved by both kids and adults alike, making them a perfect addition to any cookie jar or dessert table.
The history of M&M Cookies is closely tied to the iconic M&M candies themselves. M&M candies were first introduced in 1941 by Forrest Mars Sr., son of the founder of the Mars Company, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey Chocolate’s president. The name “M&M” stands for “Mars & Murrie,” paying homage to the creators.
M&M candies were initially created for the military during World War II because they could withstand high temperatures without melting. Their popularity grew rapidly, and they became a favorite among the public, leading to various uses in baking, including M&M Cookies.
The combination of the vibrant M&M candies with the soft and buttery cookie dough creates a visually appealing and scrumptious treat. M&M Cookies have become a classic and beloved recipe enjoyed by generations of families, especially during holidays, parties, and gatherings.
INGREDIENTS
- 115 grams (1/2 cup / 1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 3/4 cup (140 grams) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 1 and 1/4 cup (175 grams) plain flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cornflour
- 13 plain Oreo biscuits
- 1/2 cup plain M&M’s + extra for decorating
INSTRUCTIONS
- Prepare your round 23cm / 9 inch baking tin by greasing it with butter and lining it with baking or parchment paper.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F). In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar using an electric beater for 3-4 minutes, or until pale and creamy. Add the vanilla extract and the egg, then beat again until fully combined.
- Sift in the plain flour, baking soda, and cornflour into the wet ingredients, and gently fold the mixture with a wooden spoon or spatula until a smooth cookie dough forms.
- Divide the cookie dough into two portions. Press half of the cookie dough into the bottom of the prepared baking tin, spreading it out evenly with your hands to ensure there are no gaps. Place the Oreo biscuits on top of the cookie dough and gently press them down to adhere.
- Add the plain M&M’s to the other half of the cookie dough and mix them through. Take small pieces or blobs of the M&M-infused cookie dough and place them all over the Oreo layer. Gently spread the cookie dough with your hands to fully cover the Oreos.
- Bake the cookie cake in the preheated oven for approximately 20-22 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown. While the cake is still warm, press a few extra M&M’s gently into the top for added decoration.
- Allow the cake to cool for 15 minutes in the tin before transferring it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
