I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Creme de menthe adds a festive and colorful touch to the cream floating atop these yummy drinks. If you prefer, simply top the coffee with a dollop of canned whipped cream. The drink would also be delicious with a little Irish cream liqueur stirred in.

Welcome to the world of Irish Coffee, a delightful and invigorating beverage that combines the smoothness of coffee with the warmth and richness of Irish whiskey, topped with a creamy layer of whipped cream. Join us as we explore the origins, history, and traditions behind this beloved Irish drink.

Irish Coffee is believed to have been created in the 1940s by Joe Sheridan, a chef at the Foynes Airbase in County Limerick, Ireland. The airbase was a transit point for transatlantic flights, and Sheridan concocted the drink as a way to warm up weary travelers arriving on cold and damp nights.

Legend has it that on one particular evening, a flight was forced to turn back due to bad weather. As the passengers returned to the airbase, Joe Sheridan wanted to offer them a comforting and welcoming drink. He combined hot coffee, Irish whiskey, a touch of sugar, and topped it off with freshly whipped cream. The passengers were thrilled with the drink, and one of them asked if it was Brazilian coffee. Sheridan humorously replied, “No, it’s Irish coffee!”

Word of this delicious beverage quickly spread, and soon Irish Coffee became popular among locals and visitors alike. In the 1950s, the drink gained international recognition when it was introduced at the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco. The café’s owner, Jack Koeppler, and travel writer Stanton Delaplane worked together to recreate the recipe after experiencing Irish Coffee at the Shannon Airport in Ireland. The Buena Vista Café perfected the technique of floating the cream on top of the coffee, which became an iconic characteristic of Irish Coffee.

Irish Coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s a symbol of Irish hospitality and warmth. It has become a traditional drink in Ireland, particularly during the colder months and around St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The original recipe has remained largely unchanged, calling for a strong black coffee, Irish whiskey (such as Jameson or Bushmills), sugar to taste, and a generous layer of lightly whipped cream.

To properly enjoy Irish Coffee, it is customary to use a stemmed glass to showcase the layers of coffee, whiskey, and cream. The coffee is sweetened with sugar, and the whiskey is gently stirred in to create a balanced and comforting flavor. Finally, the lightly whipped cream is carefully poured over the back of a spoon to float on top, providing a creamy and luxurious finish.
