Hot Chocolate Cookies

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Hot Chocolate Cookies are a delightful and festive treat inspired by the comforting flavors of hot chocolate. These cookies capture the essence of a warm cup of cocoa with a rich chocolatey base, topped with a luscious chocolate glaze, mini marshmallows, and a sprinkle of crushed candy canes. With their cozy and indulgent flavors, these cookies are perfect for winter holidays and gatherings, bringing the joy of hot chocolate in a delightful baked form.

The history of Hot Chocolate Cookies can be traced back to the popularity of hot chocolate as a comforting and beloved beverage, especially during the cold winter months and holiday seasons. The idea of transforming the flavors of hot chocolate into a cookie form came from creative bakers looking to capture the essence of this beloved drink in a delectable treat.

The combination of chocolate cookies with a chocolate glaze and toppings like mini marshmallows and crushed candy canes replicates the experience of sipping on a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows on a chilly day. The cookie’s soft texture, rich cocoa flavor, and festive toppings evoke feelings of warmth and joy, making them a favorite addition to holiday cookie platters and family gatherings.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup corn starch
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 12 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk

TOPPING:

  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • ⅓ cup mini marshmallows
  • ¼ cup crushed candy canes

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Whisk together flour, corn starch, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add softened butter, vanilla, and milk to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined. The dough should come together smoothly. Cover the dough and chill it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll the chilled dough into 1½ inch balls and place them 2-3 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Gently flatten the dough balls with the palm of your hand to create slightly flattened cookies.
  4. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes until they are set. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet.
  5. Once the cookies have cooled, prepare the topping. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and milk. Microwave the mixture on half power for 2 minutes, then stir. Continue microwaving on half power for 20 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is smooth and melted.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate glaze over the cooled cookies.
  7. Top each cookie with mini marshmallows and a sprinkle of crushed candy canes.

These Hot Chocolate Cookies are a delightful and festive treat, perfect for sharing with loved ones during the holiday season or enjoying as a cozy and indulgent treat on a chilly day. The combination of rich chocolate flavors, creamy glaze, fluffy marshmallows, and the refreshing touch of crushed candy canes creates a sensory experience reminiscent of sipping on a cup of warm hot chocolate by the fireplace.
