The baking time is 25-30 minutes, and the glaze can be prepared while the rolls are baking or cooling. Therefore, the total time needed to make this recipe is around 2 and a half to 3 hours.

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature

For the filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 2 large oranges
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • Zest of 1 large orange

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 1/2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter, milk, and water until the butter is melted.
  3. Add the butter mixture to the flour mixture and stir until well combined.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Gradually add the remaining 1/2 cup of flour, stirring until the dough comes together and is no longer sticky.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  8. While the dough is rising, make the filling by beating together the butter, sugar, orange zest, and orange juice until smooth.
  9. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a 16 x 21-inch rectangle.
  10. Spread the filling over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
  11. Starting at the long end, roll up the dough tightly and pinch the seams together.
  12. Cut the roll into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  13. Cover the rolls with a clean towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  14. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  15. Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until they are golden brown and baked through.
  16. While the rolls are baking, make the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest until smooth.
  17. When the rolls are finished baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  18. Drizzle the glaze over the top of the warm rolls and serve.
