Halloween themed Glass Cupcakes

About

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Glass Cupcakes are a spooky and creative Halloween-themed treat that combines moist and rich chocolate cupcakes with a creamy frosting and edible “glass” and “blood” decorations. These cupcakes are not only delicious but also visually captivating, making them a perfect addition to any Halloween party or gathering.

Glass Cupcakes, also known as “broken glass cupcakes,” are a modern invention that takes inspiration from the creepy and eerie ambiance of Halloween. The concept of creating edible glass-like decorations for desserts adds a fun and slightly spooky twist to traditional cupcakes.

Halloween is a festive holiday celebrated on October 31st, originating from ancient Celtic traditions. Over time, it has evolved into a day of spooky costumes, trick-or-treating, and themed parties. During Halloween celebrations, people indulge in various sweets and treats, making cupcakes an ideal dessert choice.

The Glass Cupcakes incorporate the elements of Halloween, such as the dark chocolate cupcakes representing the night, the “glass” resembling shattered glass, and the “blood” drizzle adding a touch of creepy mystery.

INGREDIENTS

Cupcakes:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (separate from the 2 cups)
  • 1 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup cold coffee
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil

Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, slightly softened
  • 1 package cream cheese
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 4 to 4½ cups confectioners’ sugar

Glass:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup light corn syrup
  • Parchment paper

Blood:

  • ½ cup corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

INSTRUCTIONS

Cupcakes:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cupcake tin with 24 liners.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, 2 cups of sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Create a well in the center.
  3. Pour the eggs, cold coffee, buttermilk, and vegetable oil into the well. Mix until smooth; the batter will be thin. Spoon the batter into the cupcake pan.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 14-17 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely.

Frosting:

  1. Using an electric mixer and a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Add the cream cheese and vanilla; beat until fully incorporated.
  2. Gradually increase the mixer speed to high and continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary with a rubber spatula.
  3. Gradually add 4 cups of confectioners’ sugar, beating on low speed until well combined. Add additional confectioners’ sugar until the desired consistency for piping is achieved. Beat on high speed until well combined and smooth.

Glass:

  1. Mix sugar and corn syrup in a microwave-safe glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap and microwave for 2 minutes. Remove the plastic wrap carefully to avoid steam. Stir and cover with a new piece of plastic wrap. Microwave for 1 minute.
  2. Carefully pour the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spreading it as thinly as possible. Allow it to cool completely, and then break it into shards. Store the glass shards in an airtight container until ready to use.

Blood:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients in a blender for a few seconds.

Assembly:

  1. Pipe the frosting on each cupcake using an open star cupcake tip in a swirl, working from the outside to the center.
  2. Add the glass shards on top of the frosting to resemble broken glass.
  3. Drizzle the blood mixture on top of the cupcakes for a spooky and dramatic effect.
