I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Fried Green Tomatoes are a beloved Southern dish that showcases the tangy and slightly tart flavors of unripe tomatoes. This classic recipe transforms firm green tomatoes into crispy, golden-brown slices that are bursting with flavor. With their crunchy coating and tender interiors, Fried Green Tomatoes offer a delightful combination of textures and a tangy taste that is sure to satisfy your palate. Whether enjoyed as an appetizer, side dish, or as a unique twist on a sandwich, Fried Green Tomatoes are a true Southern delicacy.

The roots of Fried Green Tomatoes can be traced back to the Southern United States, where the tradition of using unripe tomatoes in cooking originated. In the South, where summers are long and warm, tomatoes are often harvested while still green to prevent them from becoming overripe or spoiled.

Frying green tomatoes emerged as a popular way to utilize these unripe fruits. The process of frying transforms the tart and firm green tomatoes into a deliciously crispy and savory treat. The dish gained widespread popularity through the novel “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg and the subsequent film adaptation, which brought national attention to this Southern specialty.

To make Fried Green Tomatoes, the unripe tomatoes are sliced, coated in a seasoned cornmeal or flour mixture, and then fried until they achieve a beautiful golden-brown color. The cornmeal or flour coating provides a satisfying crunch, while the tangy flavor of the green tomatoes shines through.

MAKES: 10 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 4-6 medium-sized green tomatoes, firm and unripe
  • 1 cup cornmeal or all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for added heat)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick rounds, discarding the ends.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine the cornmeal or flour, salt, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well to ensure the seasonings are evenly incorporated.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat, ensuring there is enough oil to fully submerge the tomato slices.
  4. Dip each tomato slice into the cornmeal or flour mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Gently shake off any excess coating.
  5. Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the tomatoes in batches to ensure even cooking.
  6. Cook the tomatoes for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Adjust the heat if needed to prevent burning.
  7. Once fried to perfection, remove the tomatoes from the oil using a slotted spoon or tongs, allowing any excess oil to drain back into the pan.
  8. Transfer the Fried Green Tomatoes to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any remaining oil.
  9. Repeat the coating and frying process with the remaining tomato slices.
  10. Serve the Fried Green Tomatoes while still hot, as an appetizer, side dish, or as a unique twist on a sandwich. They pair wonderfully with tangy remoulade sauce or a drizzle of spicy mayonnaise.
