About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

INGREDIENTS:

  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip orange peel
  • 1 strip lime peel
  • 2 slices fresh peeled ginger
  • 1 whole clove

HOT TODDY:

  • 1 black tea bag
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons spiced syrup
  • 3 tablespoons whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

INSTRUCTIONS:

TO MAKE THE SPICED SYRUP:

  1. Combine all of the spiced syrup ingredients in a saucepan and place over medium-high heat.
  2. Whisk until the sugar has dissolved and then bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat and strain the mixture into an airtight container.
  5. Once cooled, cover the container and store the spiced syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

TO MAKE THE HOT TODDY:

  1. In a mug, place the black tea bag and pour the boiling water over it.
  2. Let the tea steep for a few minutes, then remove the tea bag.
  3. Stir in the honey, spiced syrup, whiskey, and lemon juice.
  4. Stir until the honey dissolves and all the ingredients are well mixed.
  5. Your hot toddy is ready to enjoy. Sip it slowly and savor the warm and comforting flavors.

Here are some variations you can try for the Spiced Hot Toddy:

1. Cinnamon-Apple Hot Toddy:

Add a splash of apple cider or apple juice to the hot toddy for a cozy apple-cinnamon flavor.

Garnish with a thin apple slice and a cinnamon stick.

2. Ginger-Orange Hot Toddy:

Infuse the hot toddy with extra ginger flavor by using ginger tea instead of black tea.

Garnish with an orange twist and a candied ginger.

3. Spiced Cranberry Hot Toddy:

Mix in a splash of cranberry juice or cranberry syrup for a tart and festive twist.

Garnish with a fresh cranberry and a rosemary sprig.

4. Maple-Pumpkin Hot Toddy:

Replace the honey with maple syrup for a richer flavor.

Add a touch of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice for a fall-inspired toddy.

5. Peppermint-Mocha Hot Toddy:

Brew peppermint tea and use it as the base instead of black tea.

Stir in a spoonful of cocoa powder and a dash of peppermint extract.

Garnish with a candy cane or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

6. Vanilla-Chai Hot Toddy:

Brew vanilla chai tea and use it as the base for a comforting vanilla-spiced twist.

Add a splash of milk or cream for a creamy texture.

7. Lemon-Rose Hot Toddy:

Replace the orange and lime peels with lemon peel for a brighter citrus flavor.

Garnish with a lemon twist and a fresh rose petal.

8. Cardamom-Maple Hot Toddy:

Add a crushed cardamom pod to the spiced syrup while simmering.

Replace the honey with cardamom-infused maple syrup.

9. Berry-Basil Hot Toddy:

Muddle a few fresh basil leaves in the mug before adding the other ingredients.

Add a splash of berry juice or berry-flavored syrup for a fruity touch.

10. Spiced Pear Hot Toddy:

Mix in a splash of pear juice or pear liqueur for a delicate pear flavor.

Garnish with a thin pear slice and a cinnamon stick.

11.Vanilla Infusion:

Add 1 vanilla bean (split and scraped) to the syrup ingredients.

Simmer as directed in the spiced syrup recipe.

12.Chili Kick:

Add 1 dried red chili pepper to the syrup mixture for a spicy twist.

Remove the chili before storing the syrup.
