Dustys Burgers

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 pound ground bison or ground beef
  • 2 round onion slices
  • Olive oil
  • 4 pretzel buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Nuka-Cola BBQ Sauce
  • 4 butter lettuce leaves
  • 4 tomato slices
  • Mayonnaise for serving

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat a grill.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the ground bison with a generous amount of salt and pepper and divide into 4 equal portions. Shape the meat into patties slightly larger than the buns you are using.
  3. Rub the onion slices with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place the onion near the main source of heat on the grill. Cook until nearly charred. Transfer to a plate and cover with aluminum foil.
  4. Place the bison patties over the main source of heat on the grill. Cook each side for 3-4 minutes. Add slices of cheese on the patties, cover the grill, and cook for 1 minute to melt the cheese.

TO ASSEMBLE:

  1. Take the bottom portion of a bun and add a large amount of the Nuke-Cola BBQ Sauce.
  2. Add a slice of butter lettuce and top with a portion of the onions.
  3. Place the bison patty and tomato slice.
  4. Spread mayo on the top bun and place on top.

Enjoy your delicious bison (or beef) burgers with all the flavorful toppings!

Here are a few variations you can try for the burger recipe:

  1. Mushroom and Swiss Bison Burger:
    • Add sautéed mushrooms to the burger, along with Swiss cheese, for a rich and earthy flavor.
    • Sauté the mushrooms in butter until golden and tender, then place them on top of the burger patty before adding the cheese.
  2. Bacon and Blue Cheese Bison Burger:
    • Top the burger patty with crispy bacon and crumbled blue cheese for a savory and tangy twist.
    • Cook the bacon until crispy and place it on top of the patty along with the blue cheese during the last minute of grilling.
  3. Southwest Bison Burger:
    • Give the burger a southwestern flair with the addition of sliced avocado, roasted red peppers, and a spicy chipotle mayo.
    • Make a chipotle mayo by mixing mayo with some minced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for that smoky, spicy kick.
  4. Greek Bison Burger:
    • Create a Mediterranean-inspired burger by adding feta cheese, sliced cucumbers, red onions, and a tzatziki sauce.
    • Make the tzatziki sauce with Greek yogurt, minced garlic, chopped dill, grated cucumber, and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  5. Hawaiian Teriyaki Bison Burger:
    • Go tropical with a teriyaki glaze, pineapple slices, and a touch of sesame seeds.
    • Brush the burger patty with teriyaki sauce while grilling and add a slice of grilled pineapple on top.
  6. Spicy Jalapeno Bison Burger:
    • Add some heat to your burger with sliced jalapenos and a spicy pepper jack cheese.
    • Grill the jalapeno slices briefly for a smoky flavor and place them on top of the patty before adding the cheese.
  7. Caprese Bison Burger:
    • Infuse some Italian flavors by adding fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and basil leaves.
    • Drizzle with balsamic glaze or reduction for a burst of sweetness.
  8. BBQ Bacon Ranch Bison Burger:
    • Combine classic flavors with BBQ sauce, crispy bacon, ranch dressing, and a slice of cheddar cheese.
    • Top the burger with crispy bacon, drizzle with ranch dressing, and finish with melted cheddar cheese.
