Classic Tiramisu is a beloved Italian dessert that harmoniously blends layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers with a creamy mascarpone filling. This elegant treat captures the essence of indulgence and sophistication, offering a symphony of flavors and textures that dance on the palate. Tiramisu, which translates to “pick me up” in Italian, is aptly named for its invigorating combination of coffee and the luscious richness of mascarpone. In this recipe, we’ll delve into the history of Tiramisu, its rise to international fame, and guide you through the step-by-step process of creating this iconic dessert—a masterpiece that celebrates the art of layering and the allure of Italian culinary tradition.

The origins of Tiramisu are rooted in Italy, with various regions claiming to be its birthplace. One popular theory attributes the creation of Tiramisu to the city of Treviso in the Veneto region. Another theory suggests that it was developed in the town of Siena, where it was offered to Renaissance rulers as an aphrodisiac. Regardless of its precise origin, Tiramisu’s modern form emerged in the 20th century and gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. The dessert’s blend of espresso-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cream, and cocoa powder became a symbol of Italian culinary excellence, earning it a place on dessert menus around the world.

Tiramisu’s culinary significance lies in its artful combination of contrasting elements. The coffee-soaked ladyfingers provide a delicate texture that contrasts with the velvety richness of the mascarpone filling. The dessert’s balance of sweetness, bitterness, and creaminess creates a harmonious symphony of flavors that is both indulgent and comforting. Tiramisu showcases the magic of layering and the culinary prowess of transforming simple ingredients into a sophisticated masterpiece.

SERVES: 8

PREP TIME: 30 MINUTES, PLUS TIME TO CHILL

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE MASCARPONE FILLING:

  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces (about 1 cup) mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

FOR ASSEMBLING THE TIRAMISU:

  • 24-28 ladyfinger cookies (savoiardi)
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso, cooled
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Chocolate shavings or grated chocolate, for garnish (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thickened.
  2. Add the softened mascarpone cheese to the egg yolk mixture. Gently fold and combine until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  4. Gradually fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until well incorporated. Be gentle to maintain the airy texture.
  5. In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee or espresso with the coffee liqueur (if using).
  6. Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, allowing it to soak briefly without becoming overly saturated.
  7. Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers in the bottom of a serving dish.
  8. Spread a layer of the mascarpone filling over the ladyfingers.
  9. Repeat the layering process with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone filling.
  10. Continue layering until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of the mascarpone filling on top.
  11. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate the Tiramisu for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.
  12. Before serving, dust the top of the Tiramisu with unsweetened cocoa powder.
  13. If desired, garnish the Tiramisu with chocolate shavings or grated chocolate for an extra touch of elegance.
  14. Present the Classic Tiramisu as a masterpiece of layered flavors and textures, inviting your guests to savor each spoonful.
  15. Share the story of Tiramisu’s Italian heritage and its journey to becoming a globally beloved dessert.
  16. As you indulge in the luxurious layers of Tiramisu, appreciate the balance of coffee-infused ladyfingers and the creamy embrace of mascarpone.
