Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, 1/3 cup sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, warm milk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a clean, greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. In a small bowl, mix together 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon.
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it into four equal pieces.
  9. Roll out each piece into a circle, about 10 inches in diameter.
  10. Place the first circle on a piece of parchment paper and brush with melted butter.
  11. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  12. Place the second circle on top of the first and repeat, brushing with melted butter and sprinkling with cinnamon sugar.
  13. Repeat with the third circle.
  14. Place the fourth circle on top of the others and brush with melted butter, but do not sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  15. Place a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter in the center of the dough to mark the center.
  16. Using a sharp knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into 16 equal strips, starting at the cookie cutter and working your way to the edge.
  17. Take two adjacent strips and twist them away from each other twice.
  18. Pinch the ends together to seal.
  19. Repeat with all the strips until you have a star-shaped loaf.
  20. Let the bread rise for 15-20 minutes.
  21. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.
  22. Let the bread cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
