I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Prepare to embark on a delightful culinary journey with a recipe that combines the warmth of cinnamon candies, the tartness of apples, and a touch of sweetness. Cinnamon has been a beloved spice throughout history, renowned for its distinctive aroma and flavor. It has been used in various culinary traditions and has found its way into a wide range of recipes. Cinnamon candies, often known as red-hot candies, are a popular confectionery item that adds a burst of cinnamon flavor to any dish. The combination of cinnamon and apples is a classic pairing that has been enjoyed for generations.

Apples, with their crisp texture and natural tartness, have long been celebrated in both sweet and savory dishes. They hold a special place in many cultures and cuisines, symbolizing everything from fertility and wisdom to beauty and temptation. The tradition of cooking apples with sugar and spices dates back centuries, as people sought to enhance the natural flavors of this beloved fruit.

In the case of cinnamon apples, the recipe itself is a testament to the creativity and innovation found in home kitchens. Alma Dinsmore’s contribution to this culinary tradition showcases a delightful twist by incorporating cinnamon candies. By melting these candies, Alma introduces a playful element to the recipe, making it a hit with teenagers who can actively participate in the cooking process.

PREP: 20 MIN. + CHILLING

MAKES: 6 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups water
  • ¾ cup red-hot candies
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 6 medium tart apples, peeled and quartered

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large saucepan, bring the water, red-hot candies, and sugar to a boil over medium heat. Stir continuously until the candies and sugar are completely dissolved.
  2. Reduce the heat to a simmer and carefully add the quartered apples to the saucepan. Make sure the apples are fully submerged in the syrup.
  3. Cook the apples, uncovered, on a simmer until they become tender. This process usually takes around 15-20 minutes.
  4. Once the apples are cooked, remove them from the saucepan using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a serving dish.
  5. Pour the sugar syrup from the saucepan over the apples, coating them evenly. The syrup will add a sweet glaze to the apples.
  6. Allow the apples to cool slightly before covering the serving dish.
  7. Refrigerate the dish for at least 3 hours to chill and allow the flavors to meld together.
  8. Once chilled, the cinnamon apples are ready to be served. Enjoy!

NOTE

  • You can adjust the sweetness of the recipe by adding more or less sugar according to your preference. The red-hot candies give a vibrant red color to the apples, but you can experiment with different types of candies or food coloring for variations in color. This recipe is versatile and can be enjoyed as a refreshing salad or a delightful side dish.
