I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Baked Halibut is a classic dish that combines the delicate flavors of halibut fish with a rich tomato-based sauce. This dish has a long history and has been enjoyed by seafood enthusiasts for generations. The tender halibut fillets are seasoned, coated with flour, and baked to perfection in a flavorful tomato and Crisco mixture. The result is a mouthwatering and satisfying meal that showcases the natural taste of halibut while infusing it with the savory goodness of the sauce.

Baked Halibut has its roots in traditional maritime cuisine, particularly in regions where halibut is a prominent catch. Halibut, known for its mild flavor and firm texture, has been a prized ingredient in various cuisines throughout history. As communities settled along coastal areas, they developed recipes that showcased the abundant seafood available to them. Baking was a popular cooking method because it allowed for easy preparation and enhanced the flavors of the ingredients.

Over time, the combination of halibut with tomatoes and seasonings became a popular choice. The acidity of tomatoes balanced the richness of the fish, creating a harmonious blend of flavors. The addition of Crisco, a brand of vegetable shortening, further elevated the dish’s taste and texture.

This recipe likely originated in home kitchens and eventually found its way into cookbooks and culinary traditions. It exemplifies the kind of hearty, comforting meals that families would gather around, especially in coastal communities where fishing was a way of life.
