Throughout history, fritters symbolized both indulgence and resourcefulness. They were often prepared using readily available ingredients, making them a delicious way to use up excess fruit or create a treat that could be enjoyed by all. INGREDIENTS

  • 1-1/2 cupfuls flour
  • 2 teaspoonfuls baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoonful salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoonful melted Crisco (vegetable shortening)
  • 3/4 cupful milk
  • 3 apples, cut into quarter-inch slices
  • 3 tablespoonfuls sugar
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Powdered sugar (for sprinkling)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by peeling, coring, and slicing the apples into quarter-inch thick slices.
  2. Sprinkle 2 tablespoonfuls of sugar and the strained juice of the lemon over the apple slices. This step enhances the apples’ natural sweetness and adds a touch of zesty flavor.
  3. In a bowl, sift together 1-1/2 cupfuls of flour, 2 teaspoonfuls of baking powder, the remaining sugar, and 1/4 teaspoonful of salt. This dry mixture forms the base of the batter.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3/4 cupful of milk and a well-beaten egg until thoroughly combined.
  5. Gradually add the milk and egg mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring thoroughly to create a smooth batter.
  6. Incorporate 1 tablespoonful of melted Crisco into the batter, enhancing its richness and flavor.
  7. Cover the prepared apple slices with the batter, ensuring each slice is coated evenly.
  8. In a deep frying pan or pot, heat plenty of Crisco over medium-high heat. The oil should be heated to a temperature where a small breadcrumb browns within sixty seconds.
  9. Carefully drop the batter-covered apple slices into the hot Crisco, allowing them to fry for approximately four to five minutes. This frying process creates the iconic golden-brown and crispy exterior of the fritters.
  10. Once the fritters have achieved a delightful crunch and color, remove them from the hot oil and drain them on paper towels.
  11. Sprinkle the freshly fried Apple Fritters with powdered sugar, adding a touch of sweetness that complements the apples’ natural flavors.
  12. Serve the Apple Fritters with a sense of delight and anticipation, celebrating the culmination of flavors and textures that make this treat so beloved.
