- ¼ cup plus ⅓ cup butter, softened, divided
- 1 egg
- 2 cups finely chopped peeled tart apples
- 1¼ cups packed brown sugar
- ¾ cup finely chopped walnuts
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the Apple Cider Cream Cheese Frosting
- 2 cups apple cider or juice
- 1 cinnamon stick (3 inches)
- 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a large bowl, combine 2¼ cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the milk, cider, and ¼ cup butter until it reaches a temperature of 120°-130°F (48°-54°C). Add the heated mixture to the dry ingredients and beat until just moistened. Add the egg and continue beating until the dough is smooth. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft and slightly sticky dough.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes. Roll out the dough into a 15×10-inch rectangle. Spread the remaining softened butter over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges.
