INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the molasses until well incorporated.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing well after each addition.
  7. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  8. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the baking dish for 10 minutes.
  10. Transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
