Ambrosia Fruit Salad

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Ambrosia Fruit Salad is a timeless and heavenly dessert that combines a medley of fruits, coconut, marshmallows, and whipped cream. This classic Southern dish is often served during holidays, family gatherings, and special occasions. Ambrosia, meaning “food of the gods” in Greek mythology, lives up to its name with its delightful combination of flavors and textures. With its sweet and creamy taste, Ambrosia Fruit Salad is a nostalgic and comforting treat that has been enjoyed for generations.

The origins of Ambrosia Fruit Salad can be traced back to the late 19th century in the United States. It became especially popular in the Southern states, where the abundance of fresh fruits and tropical ingredients made it a perfect fit for the region’s cuisine.

The salad was traditionally made with seasonal fruits such as oranges, pineapple, bananas, and coconut, combined with mini marshmallows and a creamy dressing. Ambrosia Fruit Salad quickly became a staple at family gatherings and holiday feasts, as its vibrant colors and delicious flavors brought joy and celebration to the table.

Over time, variations of Ambrosia Fruit Salad emerged, with additional ingredients such as maraschino cherries, pecans, and even sour cream or yogurt being incorporated. These additions added depth and complexity to the salad, making it even more customizable to individual preferences.

MAKES: 6 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups canned mandarin oranges, drained
  • 2 cups pineapple chunks, drained
  • 2 cups shredded coconut
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, drained and halved (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks, shredded coconut, and mini marshmallows.
  2. If desired, add the maraschino cherries and chopped pecans to the bowl. These ingredients add a touch of sweetness and crunch to the salad.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream or Greek yogurt and whipped cream until well combined. This creamy mixture will serve as the dressing for the Ambrosia Fruit Salad.
  4. Pour the creamy dressing over the fruit mixture in the large bowl. Gently fold the ingredients together until they are evenly coated.
  5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the Ambrosia Fruit Salad for at least 1 hour, or overnight if desired. This chilling time allows the flavors to meld together and the salad to develop its signature creaminess.
  6. Just before serving, give the salad a gentle stir to incorporate any settled dressing and ensure even distribution of ingredients.
  7. Serve the Ambrosia Fruit Salad chilled in individual bowls or on a platter. Garnish with additional shredded coconut or a sprinkle of chopped pecans for added visual appeal, if desired.
