Prairie Fire Dip

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Prairie Fire Dip is a zesty and flavorful appetizer that combines the creamy richness of refried beans with the smoky notes of provolone cheese and spices. This dip offers a perfect blend of comfort and heat, making it an excellent choice for parties, game nights, or any gathering where you want to add some spice to your appetizer spread. With its simple preparation and bold flavors, Prairie Fire Dip is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

The exact origin of Prairie Fire Dip is unclear, but it is believed to have emerged as a popular appetizer in the Southwestern United States, where Tex-Mex flavors and spicy dips are widely enjoyed. It draws inspiration from traditional Mexican cuisine and incorporates ingredients commonly found in Tex-Mex dishes.

The combination of refried beans, melted cheese, and spices creates a delicious and satisfying dip with a bold flavor profile. The addition of chili powder and hot pepper sauce gives the dip its signature kick, while the provolone cheese adds a smoky and creamy element.

Over time, Prairie Fire Dip has become a beloved appetizer choice, not only in the Southwestern region but also in various parts of the country. Its versatility allows for customization with different spice levels and additional toppings, making it adaptable to individual preferences.

PREP/TOTAL TIME: 10 MIN.

MAKES: 1¾ CUPS

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can (16 ounces) refried beans
  • ½ cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • Dash of hot pepper sauce
  • Large corn chips

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a saucepan, combine the refried beans, shredded provolone cheese, butter (if using), finely chopped onion, minced garlic clove, chili powder, and a dash of hot pepper sauce.
  2. Cook the dip over low heat, stirring frequently, until the cheese is fully melted and the dip is heated through. The low heat helps the flavors meld together and prevents the dip from burning.
  3. Transfer the Prairie Fire Dip to a serving bowl or a heated dip warmer to keep it warm.
  4. Serve the dip alongside large corn chips for dipping.
  5. Optionally, you can garnish the dip with additional shredded cheese, chopped onions, or a sprinkle of chili powder for added visual appeal.
  6. Enjoy the bold and spicy flavors of Prairie Fire Dip with its creamy texture and zesty kick. This appetizer is perfect for those who enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine and want to add a touch of heat to their party or gathering.
