Here are some variations of the Basil Chicken recipe:
- Sweet Basil Chicken: Add a touch of sweetness to the dish by incorporating 1 tablespoon of honey or brown sugar to the fish sauce before adding it to the chicken. This will balance the spiciness and add a delightful sweet and savory flavor.
- Vegetarian Basil Tofu: Replace the chicken with firm tofu cut into cubes or slices. Follow the same cooking instructions for the tofu as you would for the chicken. It will absorb the flavors of the garlic, chilies, and basil, resulting in a delicious vegetarian version of the dish.
- Basil Beef Stir-Fry: Swap the chicken for thin slices of beef, such as flank or sirloin. Marinate the beef in a mixture of soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, and a pinch of sugar before stir-frying. Then, add the Thai holy basil leaves as per the original recipe.
- Basil Shrimp Stir-Fry: Use peeled and deveined shrimp instead of chicken. Stir-fry the shrimp with garlic, chilies, and the Thai holy basil leaves. The shrimp will cook quickly, so be careful not to overcook them.
- Basil Eggplant Stir-Fry: For a vegetarian option, substitute the chicken with sliced eggplant. Precook the eggplant by frying or roasting until tender before stir-frying with garlic, chilies, and basil.
- Basil Pork Stir-Fry: Replace the chicken with thinly sliced pork loin or pork tenderloin. Marinate the pork in a mixture of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and garlic before stir-frying.
- Basil Tofu and Vegetable Stir-Fry: Create a hearty and colorful vegetarian stir-fry by combining tofu, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, and any other desired vegetables. Stir-fry the tofu and vegetables with garlic, chilies, and basil for a flavorful and nutritious meal.
- Basil Chicken and Vegetable Noodles: Stir-fry the basil chicken with an assortment of colorful vegetables and toss it with cooked noodles or rice noodles for a satisfying one-pan meal.
