About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Pumpkin Dinner Rolls are a delightful and seasonal addition to any dinner table. These soft and flavorful rolls are infused with the warmth of pumpkin and a blend of aromatic spices, making them a perfect complement to autumn meals and holiday feasts. This recipe combines the goodness of all-purpose and whole wheat flour, creating a wholesome and delicious bread that is sure to be loved by both kids and adults alike.

While the exact origin of Pumpkin Dinner Rolls is not well-documented, it is believed to have evolved from traditional bread-making practices, where pumpkin was occasionally added to bread recipes for its natural sweetness and moisture. In North America, pumpkin has been a significant part of indigenous cuisines for centuries, with Native American tribes using pumpkin in various dishes and baked goods.

As European settlers arrived in North America, they brought their bread-making techniques, which eventually fused with indigenous culinary practices. Over time, pumpkin found its way into bread recipes, and the Pumpkin Dinner Rolls we know today became a popular seasonal treat, especially during the fall and holiday seasons.

The incorporation of pumpkin in these dinner rolls not only adds a subtle sweetness but also lends a lovely orange hue, adding to their appeal on festive occasions. Today, Pumpkin Dinner Rolls are cherished by families across the world, enjoyed during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other special gatherings as a symbol of warmth and abundance.

PREP: 20 MIN. + RISING

BAKE: 20 MIN.

MAKES: 20 ROLLS

INGREDIENTS

  • ¾ cup milk
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 packages (¼ ounce each) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 2 to 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup canned pumpkin
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk, brown sugar, 4 tablespoons butter, and salt to 110°-115° Fahrenheit (about 43° to 46°C); set aside. This step ensures that the milk mixture is warm enough to activate the yeast but not too hot to kill it.
  2. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in the milk mixture. Add 1½ cups all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, canned pumpkin, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and ground nutmeg. Beat the mixture until it becomes smooth.
  3. Gradually add enough remaining all-purpose flour to form a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it until it becomes smooth and elastic, which typically takes about 6-8 minutes.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, usually about 1 hour.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 20 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased 13×9-inch baking pan. Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes or until they have doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Melt the remaining butter and brush it over the risen rolls.
  7. Bake the Pumpkin Dinner Rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
  8. Once baked, remove the rolls from the pan and transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve the rolls warm, allowing everyone to enjoy their delightful pumpkin-infused aroma and flavor.
