I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Maple Sugar Cake is a luscious and decadent dessert that celebrates the rich and distinctive flavor of maple syrup. This delightful cake is a testament to the natural sweetness and warmth of this beloved Canadian ingredient. With its tender crumb and irresistible maple glaze, Maple Sugar Cake is a true delight for any occasion, showcasing the unique taste of maple in every bite.

The history of Maple Sugar Cake is deeply rooted in the maple syrup tradition of Canada and northeastern regions of the United States. Maple syrup has been cherished by Indigenous peoples for centuries, with early settlers learning from them how to extract and utilize the sweet sap of maple trees. Over time, maple syrup became a beloved ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes, capturing the hearts of culinary enthusiasts.

The recipe for Maple Sugar Cake evolved from the desire to showcase the distinct flavor of maple syrup in a moist and indulgent dessert. It is believed to have originated in Quebec, Canada, where maple syrup production is deeply ingrained in the culture. As maple syrup gained popularity, so did the demand for recipes that highlighted its natural sweetness.

Today, Maple Sugar Cake continues to be a cherished dessert in maple syrup-producing regions, often enjoyed during maple syrup festivals and as a special treat during the maple syrup harvesting season. The cake’s popularity has spread beyond its roots, captivating taste buds worldwide and becoming a beloved symbol of the maple syrup tradition.

PREP: 20 MIN

BAKE: 20 MIN. + COOLING

MAKES: 12-14 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CAKE:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk

FOR THE MAPLE GLAZE:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and maple syrup until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the vanilla extract and beat in the eggs, one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing well after each addition. This helps ensure a tender and evenly mixed batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. While the cake is baking, prepare the maple glaze. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the maple syrup, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let the glaze cool slightly.
  9. Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once the cake has cooled, place it on a serving platter and generously pour the maple glaze over the top, allowing it to cascade down the sides of the cake.
  11. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before slicing and serving the cake.
  12. Enjoy a slice of Maple Sugar Cake on its own or pair it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra touch of indulgence.

CONCLUSION:

  • Maple Sugar Cake is a true testament to the unique and delightful flavors of maple syrup. Its tender crumb, combined with the luscious maple glaze, creates a dessert that is both elegant and comforting.
