Tzatziki has a long and storied history that can be traced back to ancient Greece. It is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region, where yogurt, cucumbers, and fresh herbs were commonly used in culinary practices.

Throughout history, Tzatziki has been embraced by various cultures, each adding its own twist to the traditional recipe. Today, it is enjoyed not only in Greece but also in many parts of the world, where it has become a popular and versatile condiment.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (low-fat or non-fat)
  • 1 cucumber, grated and drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by preparing the cucumber for the Low-Fat Tzatziki. Wash and grate the cucumber, then place the grated cucumber in a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Press down gently to drain any excess liquid. This step is essential to prevent the Tzatziki from becoming watery.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, minced garlic, chopped dill, chopped mint, and fresh lemon juice. Mix the ingredients thoroughly to incorporate the flavors.
  3. Add the grated and drained cucumber to the yogurt mixture. The cucumber provides a refreshing crunch and a burst of flavor to the Tzatziki.
  4. Drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil over the mixture. The olive oil enhances the creaminess of the Tzatziki while adding a touch of Mediterranean richness.
  5. Season the Tzatziki with salt and black pepper to taste, ensuring a perfect balance of flavors.
  6. Stir all the ingredients together until well combined. Taste the Tzatziki and adjust the seasonings as needed to suit your preference.
  7. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the Low-Fat Tzatziki for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Before serving, give the Tzatziki a final stir and transfer it to a serving bowl.
  9. Serve the Low-Fat Tzatziki as a delightful and nutritious dip or sauce, perfect for pairing with grilled meats, falafel, pita bread, or fresh vegetables.
