Joe Froggers

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Joe Froggers are a classic New England treat that combines the flavors of molasses, rum, and spices in a soft and chewy cookie. Named after a freed slave named Joseph Brown, who was known as “Joe Frogger,” these cookies have a rich history and are deeply rooted in American culinary traditions. Joe Froggers are not only a delicious dessert but also a symbol of resilience and the ability to overcome adversity. Biting into a Joe Frogger is like taking a bite out of history and savoring the flavors of the past.

The origins of Joe Froggers can be traced back to the late 18th century in Marblehead, Massachusetts, a coastal town known for its seafaring heritage. Joseph Brown, an African-American man who had gained his freedom, lived in Marblehead and became famous for selling his unique and flavorful molasses cookies.

Legend has it that Joe Froggers got their name from the nickname “Joe Frogger” that was given to Joseph Brown. He earned this nickname due to his habit of leaping over puddles and his expertise in making these delicious cookies. The cookies became so popular among sailors and fishermen that they were carried aboard ships as a long-lasting treat during long voyages.

Joe Froggers were not only beloved for their taste but also for their durability. These cookies were made with ingredients that were readily available to sailors, such as molasses, rum, and spices, which acted as preservatives and kept the cookies fresh for extended periods. The cookies were also larger than traditional cookies, making them hearty and satisfying for sailors who needed sustenance during their journeys.

The recipe for Joe Froggers has been passed down through generations, with slight variations along the way. Today, Joe Froggers continue to be a beloved treat in New England, particularly in Marblehead, where they are celebrated during the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk festival.
