About

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Hot Apple Cider is a comforting and aromatic beverage enjoyed during the fall and winter seasons. It is a delightful blend of apple cider and various spices, creating a warm and flavorful drink that evokes feelings of coziness and nostalgia. This traditional beverage has a rich history and has been cherished in various cultures for centuries.

The history of Hot Apple Cider dates back to ancient times when apples were first cultivated in Central Asia. As trade routes expanded, apples spread to other parts of the world, including Europe and North America. In medieval Europe, the drink gained popularity, and it was often enjoyed heated with spices to combat the cold weather.

As European settlers arrived in North America, they brought their love for Hot Apple Cider with them. The abundance of apple orchards in the new land made it easy for them to continue the tradition. Over time, Hot Apple Cider became an integral part of American and Canadian cultures, especially during autumn festivals, holidays, and social gatherings.

The combination of apples, spices, and warmth made Hot Apple Cider a symbol of comfort and hospitality. Families would often prepare large batches during special occasions, welcoming guests with its delightful aroma and taste.

PREP/TOTAL TIME: 15 MIN.

MAKES: 16-20 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • ⅔ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (3 inches), broken
  • 1 gallon apple cider

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill the filter-lined basket of a large automatic percolator with the brown sugar, whole cloves, ground allspice, and broken cinnamon sticks.
  2. Pour the apple cider into the percolator, making sure it reaches the appropriate level for brewing.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for preparing coffee in the percolator, but instead of using water, use the apple cider with the spice mixture. This will allow the spices to infuse their flavors into the cider as it percolates.
  4. Turn on the percolator and allow it to heat and brew the Hot Apple Cider thoroughly.
  5. Once the Hot Apple Cider is ready, pour it into mugs or heat-resistant glasses. Optionally, you can garnish each serving with a cinnamon stick for added aroma and presentation. Serve the delicious and comforting beverage to your family and guests, spreading warmth and joy.

TIPS:

  • To add a delightful twist to your Hot Apple Cider, consider incorporating citrus fruits. Before brewing the cider with the spices, cut a couple of oranges or lemons into slices and add them to the filter-lined basket along with the other ingredients. The citrus oils and flavors will infuse into the cider, complementing the apple and spice notes, and providing a refreshing and tangy dimension to the drink.
  • Hot Apple Cider allows for creativity when it comes to spices. While the traditional combination of cloves, allspice, and cinnamon is wonderful, feel free to experiment with your favorite spices to tailor the flavor to your preferences. For a slightly spicy kick, you could add a small piece of ginger or a pinch of ground nutmeg. Cardamom pods and star anise are other fantastic options to explore. Adjust the quantities of each spice based on your taste preferences and create a signature Hot Apple Cider blend that you and your guests will love.

NOTE:

  • Hot Apple Cider is not only a delicious drink but also a way to create lasting memories and foster a sense of togetherness during the colder months. Its sweet and spiced flavors combined with the heartwarming traditions make it a cherished beverage that will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
