I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Honey Whole Wheat Bread is a nutritious and heartwarming bread that combines the goodness of whole wheat flour with the sweetness of honey. This homemade loaf is filled with wholesome ingredients and provides a delightful balance of flavors and textures. Baking your own bread allows you to savor the comforting aroma and enjoy a healthier alternative to store-bought options. Honey Whole Wheat Bread is not just a treat for your taste buds but also a symbol of the care and love that goes into homemade baking.

The tradition of baking bread dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations, where bread was a staple food. As civilizations progressed, bread-making techniques evolved and varied across different cultures.

Honey, being a natural sweetener, has a long history of being used in baking. In many cultures, honey was cherished for its flavor and believed to have various health benefits.

Whole wheat flour, which contains the entire grain, was widely used in ancient times as well. However, refined white flour became more common during the Industrial Revolution, leading to a shift away from whole grain flours.

In recent decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in whole grains and natural sweeteners. This has led to the revival of whole wheat bread recipes like Honey Whole Wheat Bread, celebrated for its nutty flavor, nutritional value, and the use of wholesome ingredients.

Today, Honey Whole Wheat Bread is a beloved homemade staple, with each loaf symbolizing the art of baking and the joy of nourishing loved ones with wholesome goodness.

PREP: 25 MIN. + RISING

BAKE: 35 MIN. + COOLING

MAKES: 2 LOAVES (16 SLICES EACH)

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 packages (¼ ounce each) active dry yeast
  • 3 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
  • ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder
  • ½ cup honey
  • ⅓ cup wheat bran
  • ⅓ cup toasted wheat germ
  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Dissolve Yeast and Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add the nonfat dry milk powder, honey, wheat bran, toasted wheat germ, ground flaxseed, canola oil, salt, whole wheat flour, and 3 cups of all-purpose flour. Beat the mixture until it becomes smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (the dough will be sticky).
  2. Knead and Let Rise: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth and elastic, which should take around 6-8 minutes. Place the dough in a bowl coated with cooking spray, turning it once to coat the top. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which will take about 1 hour.
  3. Shape the Loaves: After the first rise, punch the dough down and turn it onto a floured surface. Shape the dough into two loaves and place them in two 9×5-inch loaf pans coated with cooking spray. Cover the pans and let the dough rise again until doubled, which will take about 30 minutes.
  4. Bake and Cool: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the loaves for 35-40 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Once baked, remove the loaves from the pans and let them cool on a wire rack.
  5. Your Honey Whole Wheat Bread is now ready to be sliced and enjoyed. The sweet aroma and hearty flavor of this homemade loaf will surely bring smiles to those who taste it. Whether served fresh or toasted, Honey Whole Wheat Bread is a delicious and wholesome addition to your daily meals. Enjoy it with your favorite spreads or use it to create satisfying sandwiches and toasties. Share the love of homemade bread with your family and friends, and let each slice tell a story of warmth, nourishment, and deliciousness.
