Guacamole is a popular and versatile Mexican dip that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Made from creamy avocados and a mix of flavorful ingredients, guacamole is loved for its rich, smooth texture and delicious taste. Let’s explore the history and story behind guacamole, followed by the arrangement of ingredients and instructions to make it:

Guacamole has a long history that dates back to the time of the Aztecs in ancient Mexico. The word “guacamole” originates from the Aztec Nahuatl language, with “ahuacamolli” meaning “avocado sauce.” Avocados were highly valued by the Aztecs for their rich taste and nutritional benefits, and guacamole quickly became a staple in their cuisine.

The recipe for guacamole has evolved over time, incorporating various regional flavors and ingredients. In traditional Mexican cuisine, guacamole was prepared by mashing ripe avocados with a molcajete (a stone mortar and pestle) and combining it with lime juice, onions, tomatoes, and various spices.

Today, guacamole has become a beloved dish worldwide and is enjoyed as a dip, spread, or topping for various foods. It is a staple in Mexican cuisine, often served with tacos, nachos, quesadillas, and other traditional dishes. Guacamole has also been adapted and customized in countless ways, with additional ingredients like cilantro, jalapenos, garlic, and more, to suit different preferences and tastes.

PREP/TOTAL TIME: 10 MIN.

MAKES: ABOUT 1½ CUPS

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 medium ripe avocado, halved, seeded, and peeled
  • 4½ teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 small tomato, seeded and finely chopped
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped green chilies
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (optional)
  • Tortilla chips

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large bowl, mash the avocado with lemon juice until smooth and creamy.
  2. Stir in the finely chopped tomato, onion, green chilies, minced garlic, and salt (if desired) until well combined.
  3. Cover the bowl and chill the guacamole in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  4. Serve the guacamole with tortilla chips for dipping.

NOTE:

  • Guacamole is a versatile dip that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, snack, or accompaniment to a variety of dishes. Its creamy texture and fresh flavors make it a perfect complement to the crispy and salty tortilla chips. The tanginess of the lemon juice, the crunch of the onion and tomatoes, and the subtle heat from the green chilies all contribute to the irresistible taste of guacamole.
  • Feel free to customize your guacamole by adding additional ingredients such as cilantro, jalapenos, or even a dash of hot sauce to suit your taste preferences. Whether you’re hosting a party, having a movie night, or simply craving a delicious and healthy snack, guacamole is a fantastic choice that will surely impress your guests and leave you wanting more. Enjoy the vibrant flavors and rich creaminess of homemade guacamole!
  • Transfer the leftover guacamole to an airtight container. Choose a container that fits the amount of guacamole without much empty space. Smooth the surface of the guacamole with a spoon or spatula to remove any air pockets. This helps prevent oxidation and browning. Squeeze a small amount of lemon or lime juice over the surface of the guacamole. The acid in the citrus juice helps slow down the browning process. Seal the container tightly to create an airtight environment and prevent exposure to air. Store the guacamole in the refrigerator. It’s best to place it in the coldest part of the fridge, such as the back or the bottom shelf. Guacamole is best consumed within 1-2 days of preparation. However, if stored properly, it can last up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Check for any signs of spoilage before consuming.
