Grandma’s Applesauce Cake is a classic and comforting dessert that has been passed down through generations. This moist and flavorful cake is made with the goodness of applesauce, warm spices, and a touch of walnuts. It is a beloved family recipe that brings back fond memories of homemade goodness.

INGREDIENTS

  • ¾ cup raisins
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1½ cups applesauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • Confectioners’ sugar (optional)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place the raisins in a small bowl and pour hot water over them. Set aside to let the raisins plump up in the water.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the creamed mixture, alternating with the applesauce and water. Mix well after each addition.
  5. Drain the raisins and fold them into the cake batter along with the chopped walnuts.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Grease a 13×9-inch baking pan.
  7. Transfer the cake batter into the greased baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for approximately 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool.
  10. If desired, dust the cooled cake with confectioners’ sugar for a touch of sweetness.
  11. Grandma’s Applesauce Cake can be served warm or cold, depending on personal preference.
