Makes about 5 cups
INGREDIENTS
- 4 cups canned tomato sauce
- 1 cup cider vinegar
- 2 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
- ½ cup coarse brown mustard
- ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 small onions, finely chopped
- 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons hickory liquid smoke
- 1 teaspoon finely ground coffee beans (I use espresso beans)
- ½ teaspoon chipotle chile powder (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
- Combine all the ingredients except the salt and pepper in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Lower the heat and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, or until thick.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- The sauce can be cooled and stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
