EASY BARBECUE SAUCE

Makes about 5 cups

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups canned tomato sauce
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup coarse brown mustard
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 small onions, finely chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons hickory liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon finely ground coffee beans (I use espresso beans)
  • ½ teaspoon chipotle chile powder (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine all the ingredients except the salt and pepper in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, or until thick.
  3. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  4. The sauce can be cooled and stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
