Chocolate Velvet Dessert

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Chocolate Velvet Dessert is a decadent and rich dessert that combines the irresistible flavors of chocolate and buttercream frosting. This dessert is perfect for chocolate lovers and is often served on special occasions or as a delightful treat for any gathering. The history of this dessert is not well-documented, but its popularity can be attributed to the enduring love for chocolate and the desire for indulgent desserts.

The exact origins and history of Chocolate Velvet Dessert are unclear. However, it is believed to have been inspired by the love for chocolate and the desire to create a luxurious and indulgent dessert. Chocolate has a long and fascinating history, with its use dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Mayans and Aztecs in Central and South America.

Over time, chocolate evolved from a bitter beverage to a beloved ingredient in desserts. The combination of chocolate and buttercream frosting in the Chocolate Velvet Dessert creates a velvety smooth and rich texture that is simply irresistible. The dessert is often served at special occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries, and holiday gatherings, as a grand finale to a meal.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1½ cups chocolate wafer crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

FOR CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:

  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons 2% milk

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small bowl, combine the chocolate wafer crumbs and sugar. Stir in the melted butter. Press the mixture onto the bottom and 1½ inches up the sides of a greased 9-inch springform pan. Place the pan on a baking sheet. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes. Cool the crust on a wire rack.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the semisweet chocolate chips. Stir until smooth and allow it to cool. In a small bowl, combine the egg yolks, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla extract. Gradually stir a small amount of the egg yolk mixture into the melted chocolate until well blended. Gradually stir in the remaining egg yolk mixture. Pour the mixture into the prepared crust.
  3. Place the pan on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes or until the center is almost set. Cool the dessert on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the dessert, then cool for an additional hour. Refrigerate overnight.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the softened butter, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa, and enough milk to achieve a piping consistency. Using a large star tip, pipe the chocolate buttercream frosting onto the dessert.
