INGREDIENTS

SWEET-SPICY SAUCE

  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

 

FRITTERS

  • 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas or garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • Oil for deep-fat frying

 

INSTRUCTIONS

SWEET-SPICY SAUCE

  1. In a small bowl, combine the plain yogurt, sugar, honey, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Refrigerate the sauce until serving.

 

FRITTERS

  1. Place the chickpeas or garbanzo beans, ground cumin, salt, garlic powder, and ground ginger in a food processor. Process the mixture until the chickpeas are finely ground and the spices are well incorporated.
  2. Add the egg and baking soda to the food processor and pulse until the ingredients are blended.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the chopped fresh cilantro and thinly sliced green onions.
  4. In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Shape rounded tablespoonfuls of the bean mixture into balls.
  6. Drop a few fritters at a time into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown, turning them frequently to ensure even cooking.
  7. Once the fritters are cooked to a golden brown color, remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
