About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Buttermilk Biscuits are a cherished classic in the world of baking—a testament to the simple yet extraordinary flavors that can be achieved with just a handful of basic ingredients. These biscuits, known for their tender crumb and slight tanginess from buttermilk, have been a staple on tables for generations. Buttermilk Biscuits exemplify the art of transforming humble ingredients into a mouthwatering and versatile baked delight.

The history of Buttermilk Biscuits takes us back to a time when practicality and resourcefulness were key in the kitchen. The use of buttermilk, a byproduct of butter-making, gave rise to a variety of culinary creations, including these beloved biscuits. The tangy richness of buttermilk added depth of flavor and moisture to baked goods, making it an essential ingredient in households where every resource was valued.

Buttermilk Biscuits became especially popular in the American South, where they found their place on tables alongside comforting stews, hearty meals, and breakfast spreads. The recipe’s versatility allowed for variations, from simple everyday biscuits to more special occasions.

Beyond their practical origins, Buttermilk Biscuits also symbolize the spirit of sharing and gathering. These biscuits have graced countless family meals, community gatherings, and potluck dinners. INGREDIENTS

  • 1 quart flour
  • 2 tablespoonfuls Crisco (vegetable shortening)
  • 1 tablespoonful sugar
  • 1 teaspoonful salt
  • 1 teaspoonful baking soda
  • 1 teaspoonful baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 pint buttermilk

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by sifting together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. This ensures an even distribution of dry ingredients.
  2. Rub in the Crisco using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This step contributes to the biscuit’s flakiness and texture.
  3. Add the well-beaten egg to the mixture. The egg provides moisture and structure to the dough.
  4. In a separate container, dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk. The combination of baking soda and buttermilk creates a slight rise and adds a tangy flavor.
  5. Gradually incorporate the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients, forming a soft and slightly sticky dough. Add a bit more buttermilk if needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out lightly. Handle the dough as little as possible to avoid overworking it.
  7. Cut out the biscuits using a biscuit cutter, ensuring clean edges for even rising.
  8. Place the cut biscuits onto Criscoed baking tins, arranging them close together.
  9. Bake the Buttermilk Biscuits in a preheated hot oven at around 450°F (230°C) for approximately ten minutes. The biscuits should turn golden brown and have a tender interior.
  10. Once baked to perfection, remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

CONCLUSIONS:

  • Buttermilk Biscuits are a tribute to the time-honored tradition of baking and the joy of savoring simple yet satisfying flavors. Their history reflects the ingenuity of home cooks and the role of buttermilk as a culinary treasure. As you enjoy these biscuits, you’re partaking in a culinary journey that spans generations and celebrates the heartwarming act of breaking bread with loved ones.
