INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 6-8 sandwich rolls
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef or ground turkey until cooked through. Break it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat if needed.
  2. Add the chopped onion and finely chopped red bell pepper to the skillet with the cooked meat. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and tomato paste. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to the slow cooker. Add the crushed tomatoes, beef or chicken broth, dried oregano, dried basil, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine the ingredients.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours or on high heat for 2-3 hours. The flavors will meld and the mixture will become rich and flavorful.
  6. About 15-20 minutes before serving, stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese. Allow the cheeses to melt and blend into the sauce.
  7. Slice the sandwich rolls open. If desired, you can lightly toast them in the oven.
