Bakewell Tartlets

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Bakewell Tartlets are a delightful confection that marries the richness of buttery pastry with the lusciousness of fruit preserves. This classic dessert is a tribute to the art of baking and the creativity of infusing flavors and textures. With their origins rooted in traditional British baking, Bakewell Tartlets continue to captivate taste buds with their sweet allure and captivating history.

The history of Bakewell Tartlets takes us to the quaint English town of Bakewell, Derbyshire, where these treats are believed to have originated. The story goes that a chef mistakenly spread jam on top of an almond mixture instead of mixing it in, resulting in a delightful fusion of textures and flavors. The result was the first Bakewell Pudding, the predecessor to the Bakewell Tart.

Over time, the Bakewell Pudding evolved into various forms, including the Bakewell Tart, and its smaller counterpart, the Bakewell Tartlet. The recipe has been passed down through generations and has become a beloved dessert in British baking culture.

Bakewell Tartlets showcase the timeless appeal of simple ingredients coming together in perfect harmony. The combination of Crisco, sugar, eggs, flour, and fruit preserves creates a treat that’s both comforting and sophisticated. These tartlets have earned their place on dessert menus and tea tables, embodying the essence of English baking and offering a taste of tradition.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 tablespoonfuls sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoonfuls Crisco (vegetable shortening)
  • 1 cupful flour
  • 1/2 teaspoonful baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoonful salt
  • 1/2 teaspoonful lemon extract
  • Preserves (fruit jam or jelly)
  • Pastry (for lining tartlet tins)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by creaming the Crisco and sugar together in a bowl. This creates a light and airy base for the tartlet filling.
  2. Add the well-beaten eggs to the Crisco-sugar mixture. Beating the eggs thoroughly ensures a smooth and consistent texture.
  3. Incorporate the flour, salt, baking powder, and lemon extract into the mixture. These ingredients create the structure and flavor of the tartlet filling.
  4. Line twelve tartlet tins with pastry. This provides the foundation for the Bakewell Tartlets.
  5. Place a teaspoonful of preserves (fruit jam or jelly) in each tartlet tin. The preserves add a burst of fruity sweetness to the tartlets.
  6. Divide the prepared filling mixture evenly among the tartlet tins, spreading it over the preserves.
  7. Bake the tartlets in a moderately hot oven at around 375°F (190°C) for approximately twenty minutes. This baking time allows the filling to set and the pastry to turn golden brown.
  8. Once the Bakewell Tartlets are baked to perfection, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

CONCLUSION:

  • Bakewell Tartlets encapsulate the essence of British baking and the allure of simple yet delectable flavors. Their history is intertwined with the charming tale of a culinary mishap turned into a beloved treat. As you savor the delicate pastry, the rich almond filling, and the sweetness of the fruit preserves, you’re transported to a world of timeless flavors and traditions.
