I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Orange and Tomato Salad is a delightful and tangy dish that combines the bright and zesty flavors of oranges with the juicy and refreshing taste of tomatoes. This salad is a testament to the art of pairing contrasting ingredients to create a harmonious and flavorful culinary experience. The history of Orange and Tomato Salad reflects the creativity of using seasonal produce to craft delicious and visually appealing dishes.

The combination of oranges and tomatoes in a salad is a testament to the diverse ways in which culinary traditions evolve to create unique flavors. Oranges and tomatoes have long been enjoyed in various cuisines around the world, and the idea of combining them likely emerged as a way to bring together their contrasting flavors and textures.

Oranges have a rich history, originating in ancient Asia, while tomatoes, native to the Americas, were introduced to Europe and other parts of the world after the discovery of the New World. Over time, the availability of these ingredients and the curiosity of cooks led to the development of creative recipes, such as the Orange and Tomato Salad.

The use of tarragon vinegar and Crisco in the dressing adds a layer of complexity to the dish, enhancing the overall flavor profile. The combination of these ingredients with fresh oranges and tomatoes showcases the culinary innovation that continues to evolve over generations.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 tablespoonfuls melted Crisco (shortening)
  • 4 tomatoes
  • 4 oranges
  • 1 tablespoonful chopped parsley
  • Tarragon vinegar
  • Salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by peeling the oranges and tomatoes. Remove the peel and pith from the oranges and the skin from the tomatoes.
  2. Slice the peeled oranges and tomatoes into thin rounds.
  3. In a salad bowl, arrange the orange and tomato slices alternately, creating a visually appealing pattern.

Preparing the Dressing:

  3. Season the dressing with salt to taste. The salt will help balance the flavors and enhance the overall taste.

Assembling the Salad:
