Braised Green Beans with Pork

About

Brenda Gantt

I am a self-taught cook. I started cooking around 18 years old. I stood in the kitchen and watched my mother, who was my biggest inspiration at the time, cook.

Serves: 1

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen green beans
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 inch of peeled/sliced fresh ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 1 tomato, roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • 1/4 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve
  • 5 oz. lean pork

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut each green bean in half.
  2. Heat the coconut oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger to the skillet. Sauté over medium heat until they become soft and aromatic.
  4. Stir in the red pepper flakes and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes start to break down and release their juices.
  5. Add the halved green beans to the skillet.
  6. Add the cubed lean pork to the skillet as well.
  7. Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  8. Cover the skillet and let the green beans and pork cook until they become tender.
  9. Season the dish with salt and ground black pepper according to your taste preferences.
  10. Serve the green bean and pork mixture with lemon wedges on the side for added tang and freshness.

Here are some variations of the Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry recipe:

  1. Vegetarian Green Bean Stir-Fry:
    • Omit the lean pork and add extra vegetables like sliced bell peppers, zucchini, or broccoli to make it a vegetarian-friendly dish.
    • You can also add tofu or tempeh for a plant-based protein option.
  2. Spicy Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Increase the amount of red pepper flakes or add sliced chili peppers to make the dish spicier.
    • For an extra kick, drizzle some sriracha or chili sauce over the stir-fry before serving.
  3. Teriyaki Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Make a teriyaki sauce by combining soy sauce, honey or brown sugar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and a splash of sesame oil.
    • After cooking the pork and vegetables, pour the teriyaki sauce over them and let it simmer for a few minutes until everything is well coated.
  4. Cashew Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Add a handful of cashew nuts to the stir-fry for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.
    • You can toast the cashews lightly before adding them to the dish.
  5. Green Bean and Pork Curry Stir-Fry:
    • Replace the chicken broth with coconut milk to make it creamy.
    • Mix in curry powder or red curry paste to infuse the dish with rich curry flavors.
  6. Garlic Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Increase the amount of garlic cloves for a stronger garlic flavor.
    • You can also add minced ginger for extra aromatic notes.
  7. Soy-Ginger Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Marinate the cubed pork in a mixture of soy sauce, minced ginger, garlic, and a touch of honey for at least 30 minutes before stir-frying.
    • Use this marinade as a flavor base for the entire stir-fry.
  8. Asian Green Bean and Pork Stir-Fry:
    • Add sliced shiitake mushrooms and water chestnuts for an Asian-inspired twist.
    • Flavor the stir-fry with a combination of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a dash of sesame oil.
